4 Thrift Shopping Secrets For Finding Gems!

1. Size Matters!

The size of the thrift store does matter! I typically find more items at a bigger store because they receive more donations and support from local shelters, food banks, etc. Privately owned thrift stores tend to be smaller and don't offer a great selection because they're not getting constant donations (Lisa Marie Conklin).

2. Location Matters!

Usually you would think to go to a suburban area to find goodies. Wrong! Not saying these areas don't have good items, but speaking from experience, I've typically found GEMS at the stores nobody would think to go to in a location that isn't the most glamorized. They also provide these items at a better price. Since these non-glamorized locations are more diverse, you would organically find a variety of vintage items at relatively good prices.

3. Don't be Afraid to Shop the Men's Section (for my women)

Most of my clothing for fall (over sized coats), even graphic hats and tees all have came from the men's section of thrift stores. They have the most overlooked items. Looking through all the departments will help you come up on some great finds.

4. Have an Open Mind

This especially goes for first time thrifters! When I first started it was really different and confusing and I walked out empty handed. This was because I was uneducated about thrifting and assumed it was all rags. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Research a bit about thrifting, have an open mind about items, be patient, and have fun!
